Stop Selling, Start Connecting: Why Networking Is the Ultimate Growth Hack
By Phil Gee
I've been running my own networking events in Liverpool for over seven years now. And if there's one thing I've learned in all that time, it's this: business isn't just about algorithms and automation — it's about people.
A lot of folk get "time blindness" when it comes to networking. They walk in, they want a signed contract within twenty minutes, and when that doesn't happen, they decide networking is a waste of time. It's not a waste of time. It's a waste of patience — and patience is the whole game.
Here's the thing nobody tells you upfront: nobody is standing in that room waiting to hand over their money the second you walk in. If you go there with the sole intention of selling, you'll feel it, and so will they. It's like trying to bake a cake in five minutes — you'll just end up with a mess, a burnt tray, and a slightly embarrassed look on your face.
The people I've watched build genuine businesses through networking are the ones who show up consistently, actually listen, and make it their mission to be helpful before they're ever useful commercially. They play the long game. They understand that trust isn't built in one conversation; it's built in fifty.
Find a group where you feel comfortable. Go back. Keep going back. Be reliable. And when the referrals come — and they will — they'll keep coming, because people who know you, like you, and trust you will always want to put your name forward.
You can't automate a handshake. But you can absolutely make every handshake count.
